“একাত্তরের চিঠি”বইটির ফ্ল্যাপের কথাঃ এত গৌরবময়, এত বেদনাময় বছর বাঙালির জীবনে আগে কখনাে আসেনি। বছরটি ১৯৭১। এই একটি বছরের। মাধ্যমে সমগ্র বিশ্ব বাংলাদেশকে জানল, চিনল এবং বুঝতে পারল সবজ শ্যামল প্রকৃতির কাদামাটির মতাে নরম বাঙালি প্রয়ােজনে কতটা ভয়ঙ্কর হয়ে উঠতে পারে। কোনাে সন্দেহ নেই, বাঙালি বর্ষাকালে যেমন কোমল, গ্রীষ্মে তেমনই রুক্ষ ও কঠিন। কে ভাবতে পেরেছিল, ‘ভেতাে বাঙালি' নামে অভিহিত, কাপুরুষ' পরিচয়ে পরিচিত বাঙালি জাতি। পাকিস্তান নামের অবাস্তব একটি রাষ্ট্রের জন্মের ছয় মাস। যেতে না যেতেই আত্মপরিচয় প্রতিষ্ঠায়, মাতৃভাষার অধিকার অর্জনে সােচ্চার হয়ে উঠবে? পৃথিবীতে এমন দৃষ্টান্ত বিরল যে শুধু ভাষার জন্য সংগ্রাম করে, স্বাধীনতা অর্জনের বীজটি বপন করে, ২৩ বছর অতিক্রান্ত হতে না হতেই একটি প্রদেশ স্বাধীন সার্বভৌম রাষ্ট্র হিসেবে আত্মপ্রকাশ করল । এর জন্য সেই প্রদেশের অধিবাসীদের সশস্ত্র যুদ্ধ করতে হয়েছে যুদ্ধবিদ্যায় পারদর্শী পাকিস্তানি সেনাদের বিরুদ্ধে; এবং অবিশ্বাস্য সত্য হচ্ছে, 'ভীরু, অলস, কর্মবিমুখ, কাপুরুষ, ভেতাে, যুদ্ধবিদ্যায় অনভিজ্ঞ এই বাঙালিই মাত্র নয় মাসে স্বাধীনতা ছিনিয়ে এনেছে। স্বাধীনতার জন্য প্রাণের আবেগ। যখন দুর্দমনীয় হয়ে ওঠে, তখন পৃথিবীর যত ভয়ঙ্কর। মারণাস্ত্রই ব্যবহার করা হােক না কেন, সেই আবেগের কাছে। তা তুচ্ছ হয়ে যায় । তার প্রমাণ আমরা পেয়েছি আমেরিকাভিয়েতনামের যুদ্ধে। বিশ্ববাসী সেই প্রমাণ পুনরায় প্রত্যক্ষ। করেছে ১৯৭১ সালে, বাঙালির মুক্তিযুদ্ধে। মুক্তিযুদ্ধকালে লিখিত চিঠিগুলাে শুধু লেখক-প্রাপকের। সম্পর্কে সীমাবদ্ধ নয়; যেন রক্ত দিয়ে রচিত এই কথামালা যেমন সবার সম্পদে পরিণত হয়, তেমনি পরিগণিত হবে। ইতিহাসের এক অনন্য সম্পদরূপে

জাপানিদের চোখে বাঙালি বীর জাপানিরা যে সমস্ত বাঙালিদের বীর হিসেবে সম্মান জানিয়েছেন, তাঁদের নিয়েই বিন্যস্ত এই গ্রন্থ। সেই বীরদের তালিকায় আছেন রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর, নেতাজি সুভাষচন্দ্র বসু, রাসবিহারী বসু, বিচারপতি রাধাবিনোদ পাল এবং বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবর রহমান। হ্যাঁ, জাপানিদের চোখে রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরও বীর ছিলেন। উল্লেখ্য রবীন্দ্রনাথ ভারতের স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামে জাপানি সাহায্য প্রার্থনা করেছিলেন।

একাত্তরের মার্চ থেকে বাহাত্তরের জানুয়ারি পর্যন্ত বাংলাদেশের ইতিহাসের ঘটনাবহুল পর্বটি নিয়ে এ বই। এ পর্বের প্রধান চরিত্র শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান। তাঁর গ্রেপ্তার, বন্দিজীবন, মুক্তি ও দেশে ফিরে এসে কঠিন এক বাস্তবতার মুখোমুখি হওয়ার আখ্যান এ বইটি। এক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অধ্যায়ের অনেকটাই ছিল অজানা।

মুক্তিযুদ্ধে জোহরাকে হারিয়েছে তানেস। তারপর পেরিয়ে গেছে ৫০ বছরের বেশি। আজও তানেসের বুকপকেটে সব সময় থাকে জোহরার ছবি ও চিঠি। একজন মুক্তিযোদ্ধার জীবনের সত্য ঘটনা অবলম্বনে লেখা হয়েছে উপন্যাসটি। ১৯৭১ সাল। যুদ্ধের ডাকে সাড়া না দিয়ে থাকতে পারল না তানেস। শুনে কেঁদে বুক ভাসালেও দেশের কথা ভেবে তাকে আটকে রাখেনি জোহরা। যাওয়ার আগে জোহরাকে তানেস কথা দিয়েছিল দেশ স্বাধীন করে তবেই ফিরবে তার কাছে। জোহরাও কথা দিল অপেক্ষা করবে তার জন্য। দেশ স্বাধীন করে ফিরে এল তানেস। কিন্তু পেল না জোহরাকে। পাকিস্তান হানাদার বাহিনীর হাতে নিহত হয়েছে জোহরা। সেই থেকে তানেস জোহরার ছবি আর চিঠি আঁকড়ে ধরে বেঁচে আছে। এর মধ্যে পেরিয়ে গেছে ৫০ বছরের বেশি সময়। কিন্তু মুহূর্তের জন্য তানেস বুকপকেট থেকে সরিয়ে রাখেনি জোহরার ছবি।

The Siliguri Conference held on 5 and 6 July 1971, is an entirely undiscussed chapter of the Liberation War of Bangladesh. This conference eliminated much of the confusion and aided in the formulation of the policies used during the war. This, in turn, generated cohesion, expedited the war, and led to a swifter victory. Detailed descriptions and official proceedings of the conference have not been conserved anywhere. This book, for the first time, contains along with a detailed introduction a crucial part of the formal meetings proceedings and informal discussions which took place during the conference.

বাংলাদেশের মুক্তিযুদ্ধ নিয়ে বিশ্বের পরাশক্তিগুলো জটিল এক হিসাব কষেছিল। কেবল পক্ষ বা বিপক্ষের সোজা হিসাবের বাইরে কাজ করেছিল আরও নানা সমীকরণ; ঘটনার পরম্পরা ও প্রভাব-প্রতিক্রিয়া। আর তার রেশ কেবল নির্দিষ্ট অঞ্চলের মধ্যে সীমাবদ্ধ ছিল না। অবমুক্ত হওয়া মার্কিন গোপন দলিলের তথ্য বিশ্লেষণ করে লেখা বইটি মুক্তিযুদ্ধের ইতিহাস সম্পর্কে আগ্রহীদের জন্য অবশ্যপাঠ্য।

দেশের নামে যুদ্ধ হয়। আর সে যুদ্ধ করে বাস্তবের ব্যক্তি মানুষ। সম্মুখযোদ্ধা ছাড়া আরও কত রকম মানুষের ভূমিকা থাকে মুক্তিযুদ্ধের মতো একটি বড় ঘটনার পেছনে। বলাযায় ছোট ছোট অনেক যু্দ্ধ এক হয়ে একটি বড় যুদ্ধ তৈরি হয়। কিন্তু ছকবাঁধা কাঠামোর বাইরে অবস্থান করায় সেই সব মানুষের অনেকে আমাদের পরিচিত বয়ানের বাইরে রয়ে যায়। মুক্তিযুদ্ধ কালের নারী সেই বয়ানের বাইরে থাকা এক চরিত্র। সম্মুখ যুদ্ধে অংশ না নিয়েও যারা নানা ভাবে এই যুদ্ধকে সম্ভব ও সফল করে তুলেছে। প্রথাগত ইতিহাসের কোথাও নারীরা এই যুদ্ধের উল্লেখ থাকেনা। এই বইয়ের গল্প গুলো মূলত সে রকম কয়েকজন নারীর।

The 1971 East Pakistan tragedy was not just a failure of the military but also a collapse of civil society in the West Wing. The few voices raised against the military action were too feeble to make any army change its course, a course leading to military defeat and the break-up of the country. At the time, the author was General Officer Commanding 14 Division in East Pakistan. Apart from his direct narration of the events, his portrayal of the major dramatis personae, such as Field Marshal Mohammad Ayub Khan, General Tikka Khan, and Lieutenant General A.A.K. Niazi, are insightful. A necessary text that demands scrutiny from all interested in the course of Pakistan’s history.

" Bangladesh has witnessed a continuous regress in governance since her birth in 1971. The flouting of most norms of personnel administration has created Gresham’s Law Syndrome where the bad drives out the good. All the apparatuses of modem bureaucracy in the Bangladesh administration are isomorphic mimicries which look like modern institutions on paper but prove to be ineffective. This monograph is an attempt to trace the roots and consequences of the administrative maladies. It also explores the solutions of mutually reinforcing problems. The book has several unique features. Firstly, it analyzes the administrative problems in Bangladesh in historical perspective. Secondly, the problems were analyzed in comparative perspective. Thirdly, attempts are made to evaluate the effects of measures taken after independence on the basis of quantitative evidence. This is a candid analysis of complexities and weaknesses of bureaucracy in Bangladesh, written by a former Cabinet Secretary who has spent the best part of his life in bureaucracy. Gresham ‘s Law Syndrome and Beyond offers a number of unconventional remedies for governance problems in Bangladesh. Hopefully, the recommendations of this book will stimulate debates among both practitioners and theoreticians of governance in Bangladesh."

Writing an objective biography of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the only larger-than-life political figure of Muslim Bengal, is no easy task for a historian. In this well-researched book, Sayyid A. Karim has given a fascinating account of the life of Sheikh Mujib and makes an assessment of his legacy. Separating the man from the myth, the author has drawn a moving portrait of a heroic man who triumphed against all odds and became the founding father of a new nation, Bangladesh. While still young, Sheikh Mujib passionately supported the Pakistan movement, believing that the creation of a Muslim state was the best way of emancipating Bengali Muslims from the twin yokes of British rule and Hindu economic domination. But after Pakistan came into being, he passionately rejected the power centre in distant West Pakistan which showed an utter lack of interest in the well-being of Bengalis Muslims and Hindus alike. He became the foremost standard bearer of Bengali nationalism. For a while, shortly after the establishment of military rule under Ayub Khan, Sheikh Mujib even toyed with the idea of independence. The collapse of the Ayub regime ten years later gave him the glimmer of hope that revival of democracy in Pakistan was within reach. But when his party, the Awami League, won an absolute majority in the National Parliament, it soon became evident that the military had no intention of relinquishing power. Mujib was arrested, and the Pakistan Army resorted to a blood bath in a vain attempt to crush Bengali nationalism. After nine months of the liberation war, Sheikh Mujib returned to a free Bangladesh in early 1972 as its undisputed leader. Ill-advised, he adopted populist measures like nationalisation. The economy went into a downward spiral and famine was not long in coming. The 1974 famine had a profound effect on his psyche. Bangladesh had always filled his thoughts and he became convinced that a fundamental change of course was needed to surmount the crisis. He replaced the multi-party system by one-party state and concentrated power in his hands to implement what he called his second revolution. Machiavelli wrote: Nothing is more difficult to carry out, nor more doubtful of success, nor dangerous to handle, than a new order of things. Only a true revolutionary, with an iron will to take ruthless measures against anti-social elements and die-hard opponents of the new order could successfully carry out the far-reaching changes in government and society envisioned by Sheikh Mujib. Deep down he was a soft hearted man and did not have the ruthless streak in him to take strong action against counter revolutionary elements. He ignored warning signs of a conspiracy by disaffected army officers and thereby paved the way for the tragedy that befell him.
