" The title of the project, ''Political Parties in India'', is a bit limiting. While it may have been the early focus of the exercise, it eventually evolved into an exploration in social, economic, and intellectual history of 19th and early 20th-century India that went far beyond its original intent. In this study, he explores the changes in class formations under British rule in India, investigates the spread of “modern” (particularly English) education and the new discourses it generated, and examines the increasing Indian presence in the bureaucracy, military as well as the Central and Provincial legislatures, that led to new opportunities and demands expressed in the lively media environment that had come into existence. He suggests that the political movements and organizations that were vague and inchoate in the beginning gradually became more formalized and animated later, and opines that political parties did not drive these popular movements but were actually shaped by them. He also discusses the increasing “distancing” between the Hindu and Muslim communities in the context of the competition among the educated middle classes for political and economic advancement that had far-reaching consequences later. It provides an informed and engaging review of that period – comprehensive in scope, shrewd in observation, rich in insight, unconventional in analysis, and astute in judgment. The Cruel Birth of Bangladesh is an account of the emergence of Bangladesh seen through the eyes of a sympathetic American diplomat based in Dhaka during the gathering of the storm in 1970 leading to the War of Liberation in 1971. Archer Blood glorifies the independence struggle of Bangladesh as a "Transformation of seemingly forlorn Dream into a bright shining Reality". The book reflects a deep commitment to freedom on the part of the author and reads like an epitaph for the martyrs of the struggle of the Bengali people. In 24 chapters the author chronicles the events of 1971 as he and the staff of the United States Mission in Dhaka saw them unfold. Blood had to wait until December 1998 for the State Department to declassify the documents, telegrams and other messages related to this period before he could use them. The story that emerges, portrays the large and vastly important drama of the real protagonists of the period: General Yahya Khan, Z.A. Bhutto and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Blood attempts to explain how the three men handled the enormous pressures from onrushing events - from their own constituencies, from the other two, and from their own sense of personal duty and responsibilities. The structure of the book, therefore, swings from being both an intensely personal memoir to a serious account of the many aspects of the Bangladesh crisis, which was later described by Henry Kissinger as perhaps the most complex and difficult issue to confront in the first Nixon term.

The author was awarded the Justice Mohammad Ibrahim Gold Medal for the book as the book was adjudged the most outstanding work in the arts and humanities by the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh for the years 1996-1998. Bangladesh is the last major nation-state to proclaim its identity. Here is a nation that changed its statehood twice in less than twenty-five years. The twists and turns of her recent history baffle the historians. This study explores the historical roots of this apparently enigmatic nation. Methodologically, it breaks new ground in Bangladesh studies in two ways. First, it makes explicit the underlying theories in the historical framework to explain the historical evolution of this hidden nation. Secondly, it explores the micro-foundations of social and political institutions in this region. Starting with an analysis of micro institutions at the grass-roots level, this study examines the determinants of the structure of rural settlements in Bangladesh and suggests that the lack of corporateness of rural settlements contributed to political fragmentation, instability and factionalism in this region. It puts forward the hypothesis that the weakness of institutions in rural areas of Bangladesh provided a congenial environment for conversion to Islam while rural institutions in much of South Asia arrested the spread of Islam.

সেই আঠারো জোয়ার-ভাটার দেশ, যেখানে তিনটি নদী এসে মিশেছে, বঙ্গোপসাগরের কাছে ম্যানগ্রোভ বনের গভীরে হাজার হাজার লক্ষ লক্ষ কোটি কোটি মৌমাছি বাস করতো। এই মৌমাছিদের আবার পরিচালনা করতো একজন দেবী মৌমাছি। এই মৌমাছিরা মৌচাক ভরে রাখতো ঘন সোনালী মধুতে, যাকে কেউ কেউ বলতো তরল আলো যা গাছের গা থেকে সূর্যের মিষ্টি ফোঁটার মত বেয়ে নামতো। সকল জীবজন্ত এবং পাখি এই মধু ভালোবাসতো, কিন্তু সবার চেয়ে বেশি মধু ভালবাসতো যে ছেলেটি, তার মাথায় খাড়া খাড়া চুল, আর তার নাম শনু। একদিন ক্ষুধার তাড়নায় তাড়নায় শনু মৌওয়ালিদের জন্য জরুরি নিষেধাজ্ঞা উপেক্ষা করে বনে প্রবেশ করলো। সে কী খুঁজে পাবে সেই মধু যাকে সে এত ভালোবাসে? নাকি ঐ-তিনি-যাঁর-নাম-মুখে-নেওয়া-বারণ, সেই প্রচণ্ড শক্তিশালী ভয়ঙ্কর দানবরূপী বাঘের কবলে পড়বে? ভারতের এক নামজাদা কবি, ফ্রান্সের অতি প্রিয় অলংকরণ শিল্পী, এবং বাংলাদেশের নন্দিত কবি ও কথাসাহিত্যিক শামীম আজাদের সঙ্গে চলো যাই সুন্দরবনের অন্তস্থলে, দৃষ্টিনন্দন ও কাব্যময় ভ্রমণ করে আসি।
